I've been saving it. Good thing. There's nothing else to be said after today.
Today is Sunday so we planned to see the Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue in the morning and the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo after it opened at 2:00 pm.
We left our hotel early and had breakfast in a little restaurant in the Old City filled with pastries baked by the nuns of the monastery behind it. The restaurant is located just past the beginning of the Jewish Quarter - thus our ecumenical start to the day.
The Santa Maria la Blanca is now a museum but is unique because it was built in a Christian Kingdom by Muslim architects for Jewish use. It is seen as a symbol of cooperation between the three cultures and is an exquisite example of mudejar design.
After lunch we lined up for entrance to the Cathedral even wondering if we really wanted to wait the 30 minutes outside on a really biting cold day. We are so glad we did. We have seen many amazing cathedrals in our travelling life and this one is as jaw-dropping as any we've seen. Holy Toledo comes from the widespread Christian influence in the city but the expression now aptly sums up the experience of seeing the interior of this Gothic Cathedral.
